Why I need the iSTEPup Foundation
Hi, my name is Hastings Dyson and i am 24 years old. I was raised in a family of seven where three are girls. I grown up in a small farming district, Mchinji. I remember when I was seven years old, the closest hospital was thirty kilometers away from my village. This made a healthy life hard in my village as most of the time people had to buy drugs in shops when they get sick, some even used traditional means of healing. It was also challenging for the pregnant women to walk the long distance to the hospital, because of this some of these women were being assisted by uncertified traditional birth attendants right in the village. This practice increased number of martenal deaths in my village. This is where my passion for nursing developed. One of the most debated topics here in Malawi is how to provide affordable health care to the citizens. While many focus on affordable health insurance, I believe the answer lies in having reachable health care providers. With this scholarship, I could continue my training to become a nurse practitioner and provide attainable medical services to underserved communities. When I decided to go to the college, I knew I wanted to help people like the pregnant women I’ve mentioned above. I chose to become a nurse practitioner because I can practice medicine without charging a fortune for my services. Nurse practitioners are particularly beneficial in rural communities where hospitals and doctors are limited or non-existent. These are the areas I plan to serve.
Buddy
Yekta Valikhani, Medical Docter.
Next to being a student, colleague, he also became a friend. We kept in touch and I heard about this highly motivated student’s struggle to finish his studies. With that in mind, I was very excited when I heard about iSTEPup last winter. When I presented this possible opportunity to Hastings, he immediately started collecting all the things needed for the application, another thing that moved me. I really hope that with your donations, our commitment and the organization of iSTEPup we can help him complete his training.
