Why I need the iSTEPup Foundation
It would not be possible for me to achieve my dreams without the help of iStepUp. It would have been impossible. I am coming from a family of seven where I am the first born. My mother died when I was 13 years old and my father is illiterate. In Sierra Leone if someone has not gone to school, it’s hard to find a job as the unemployment rate is very high. Because of God’s mercy I was able to study.
Now my main motive is to become a nurse. Nursing has permit me to find a good job to be able to take care of my self, my family, my community and my country as a whole. My father is poor, and needs me to take care of my young ones and I don’t have anyone to help me. So, I am very sure that without this great help, I would have had no choice but to drop out of college by now.
The other fact is that college, especially medical colleges in Sierra Leone is very expensive, so I wouldn’t be able to pay my fees. To facilitate myself through college, I would need more than five years to save enough money to sustain myself to pay my college fees.
Buddy
My name is Imogen Kemp, and I am a nurse specialising in infectious diseases from the UK. I met Isatu when I came to volunteer at Masanga Hospital, Sierra Leone, after having completed the tropical nursing diploma at LSHTM. Isatu is very keen to learn and develop, and has demonstrated a deep desire to progress herself. She is an inspiration and will surely be a credit to Sierra Leone.
