Why I need the iSTEPup Foundation
My name is Peter Gatluak Francis, a South Sudanese who was born and raised up in Kenya as a refugee. My parents relocated to Kenya due to the political instability in our country. I am currently staying at home because of financial constraints therefore I am unable to continue with my schooling in the tertiary level(university). My desire is to pursue a bachelor’s degree course in Clinical Medicine and Community Health.
As a recent high school graduate with a strong passion for healthcare and a desire to pursue a career in clinical medicine, I believe that this scholarship opportunity would be instrumental in helping me achieve my academic goals and professional goals of serving the society in the healthcare sector. My future aim is to specialize in dermatology. This is because of the rise in skin diseases affecting people in the society.
I am determined to make this dream come true. Receiving this scholarship would not only alleviate the financial burden that I face but would also provide me with the social support to further my education and pursue my career in clinical medicine.

Judith Pekelharing, AIGT and international health specialist
My name is Judith Pekelharing, I am a medical doctor (GP/huisarts) from the Netherlands. I met Peters’ father through my work for Doctors without Borders in South Sudan in 2017, and we worked together in South Sudan for the second time in 2023. Peters’ father has worked in the healthcare sector in South Sudan for his whole career and he specialized in the treatment of kala azar (visceral leishmaniasis), an infectious disease that is endemic in South Sudan. It is great to see the same motivation for the medical field in the next generation and I wish Peter all the best in his studies.
